57-Year-Old Athlete Completes Tough Norseman Triathlon
Thorsten Schröder, a 57-year-old hobby athlete from Reinbek, has successfully completed the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon in Norway. This renowned event is considered one of the toughest triathlons globally, featuring a 3.8 km cold-water fjord swim, a 180 km bike ride through mountainous terrain, and a 42.2 km marathon that finishes on the summit of Mount Gaustatoppen (1,850 meters elevation).
The Norseman Xtreme Triathlon, founded in 2003, is known for its extreme challenges. It starts with a jump from a ferry into the fjord, followed by the swim, cycling, and a mountain marathon climb. The race emphasizes self-reliance, with participants carrying their own gear and relying on personal support crews instead of aid stations. Drafting is prohibited.
Schröder found the last half of the run in the Norseman to be consistently very steep. Despite the strenuous race, he considered it a kind of sightseeing, with the landscape of the competition being a highlight. He also expressed great joy at having nothing planned in the days afterward.
Schröder's training preparations were not without incident. In March, he suffered a keyhole fracture of the fibula in a cycling accident during his training on Fuerteventura. However, he persevered and reached the summit of Gaustatoppen in just under 15 hours.
Schröder, who has previously participated in the Ironman in Hawaii multiple times, expressed relief after reaching the finish line of the Norseman. He enjoys pushing himself and fighting during athletic competitions. The Norseman triathlon competition was a great deal of fun for him.
Norway is known for its extreme sports events, with the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon being the flagship event influencing similar events across Europe. Other notable extreme sporting events in Norway include the Arctic Race of Norway, a professional road cycling race through northern landscapes.
