Revolt against Merz: SPD's Diplomatic Shift Demanded in Manifesto

Craving Dialogue Over Flashpoints,SPD Elites Call for Calm with Russia

A gaggle of high-ranking SPD politicians, both men and women, have reportedly demanded a drastic overhaul in foreign and security policy in a "manifesto". In this landmark document, obtained by the news magazine Stern, the authors champion a diplomatic diplomacy with the big bear, shunning the deployment of new US intermediate-range missiles in Germany. "What's needed right now is a gradual shift to ease tensions and cooperation with Russia," the text states.

German soil, much like the old continent, is said to be gripped by forces hell-bent on a future characterized by warfare strategies and staggering military expenditures. The document reads, "War rhetoric and colossal rearmament programs do not guarantee security for Germany and Europe, but incite instability and heightening mutual distrust between NATO and Russia."

SPD Axes Merz: The Massive Resistance to Merz's Military Plans

Germany is currently experiencing significant resistance from the SPD to the rearmament plans of Friedrich Merz. Numerous pivotal politicians are demanding dialogue with Russia, blazing a course that stands diametrically opposed to that of the federal government and SPD leadership. Names on the list include former group leader Rolf Mützenich, foreign policy expert Ralf Stegner, ex-party head Norbert Walter-Borjans, and ex-federal finance minister Hans Eichel.

Meanwhile, the SPD parliamentary group has distanced itself from the manifesto. Spokesman on foreign affairs, Adis Ahmetovic, told the AFP news agency that it was a "contentious and questionable document" that "does not represent the decision-making stance of the parliamentary group or the party". He expounded, saying that it "would not win a majority if brought before the federal party conference", with the SPD "remaining a peace-loving party". However, Ahmetovic added, the new realities call for military might in conjunction with diplomacy.

Capital Spending Spat:)Battling over Budget Battles:

The authors of the document also take issue with the proposed exorbitant military hikes. Stating that the NATO ambition to jack up member nations' defense spending to five percent of their GDP is irrational, they see "no justification for a sustained increase in the defense budget to 3.5 or 5 percent of GDP". The NATO summit at the end of the month will witness Germany pledging to significantly up its defense spending.

Pushing Back on EU's Radical Rearmament: Rallying Against Radical Rearmament

Taking aim at the EU's radical rearmament policy against Russia, the text states, "Diplomacy alone won't suffice. Only strength can serve as a deterrent". Regarding the possibility of installing new US intermediate-range missiles in Germany, they warn that "the deployment of long-range, hypersonic U.S. missile systems in Germany would make our country the primary target of attack".

The foreign policy expert Ralf Stegner, one of the paper's leading authors, spoke to Stern, explaining that their objective was to reignite the intra-party debate. Stegner opined that the SPD must maintain its affiliation with the peace movement, asserting that there is presently an "unchecked" discourse about the next ground war and conscription. "As social democrats, we must resist this militarization", Stegner stated.
