German Politician Calls for Urgent Evacuation of Refugees from Lesbos Camp

In a recent statement, Katrin Göring-Eckardt, the parliamentary group leader of the Greens in the German Bundestag, has expressed concern over the ongoing humanitarian crisis at the Kara Tepe camp on the Greek island of Lesbos.

More than 10,000 people, including a third who are children, have been waiting in poor conditions at the camp for over three months. The situation for the refugees remains dramatic, more than 100 days after a devastating fire on Moria refugee camp.

Göring-Eckardt accused the federal government of a humanitarian failure regarding the situation at Kara Tepe camp and criticized it for not taking action to find a humanitarian solution and improve European asylum policy. She expects the federal government to advocate for the evacuation of refugees from Greece.

The New Osnabruecker Zeitung reported Göring-Eckardt's comments on the conditions at Kara Tepe camp and the need for the federal government to take action. Göring-Eckardt did not specify which misery camps in Greece she was referring to, but her comments were made in relation to the current conditions at Kara Tepe camp on Lesbos.

The willingness of German municipalities and federal states to take in refugees is higher than the federal government's willingness to help so far. However, the German federal government has not taken significant steps to improve the living conditions for refugees at Kara Tepe camp on Lesbos.

Chancellor Angela Merkel and Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer have not used the German EU Council presidency to address the humanitarian crisis at Kara Tepe camp. This has led to criticism from Göring-Eckardt, who has expressed disappointment with the federal government's refugee policy record.

The Greek Minister for Migration and Asylum, Notis Mitarachi, advocated for the evacuation of all people from the squalid camps in Greece before Christmas. Göring-Eckardt has followed suit, calling for the evacuation of all refugees from the provisional camp of Kara Tepe on Lesbos before Christmas.

Göring-Eckardt's comments come in the wake of the fire on Moria refugee camp, which occurred more than 100 days ago and has not been addressed by the German federal government. The fire left thousands of refugees without shelter, and the situation at Kara Tepe camp has since deteriorated.

In light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis at Kara Tepe camp, Göring-Eckardt's call for action is a powerful reminder of the need for the German federal government to take a more active role in addressing the needs of refugees in Greece.
