In a significant move, the U.S. Senate has unanimously adopted a resolution on September 18, 2022, to establish a national day of remembrance for Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative figure who was tragically assassinated at the age of 31 on September 10, 2021.
The resolution, presented by Representative Jimmy Patronis in the House of Representatives and Senator Rick Scott in the Senate, proposes October 14 as the national day of remembrance for Kirk, a date that holds special significance as it is his birthday.
The resolution, classified as a 'simple resolution,' does not yet inscribe law and does not require a full Senate vote. However, it states that Kirk consistently promoted the values of individual freedom, open debate, the importance of civic engagement, and the defense of constitutional principles.
The tribute to Kirk includes a grand ceremony in Glendale, Arizona, scheduled for Sunday. Notably, former President Donald Trump has announced his intention to posthumously award Kirk the Liberty Medal, the highest civilian honor in the United States. Trump is expected to attend both the ceremony in Glendale, Arizona, and the Liberty Medal ceremony.
The Liberty Medal ceremony will also involve the participation of the American President. Louis Alliot, vice-president of the French RN, and the American President will be present at the ceremony.
However, the proposal for the national day of remembrance has not been met with universal approval. Democrats in the House of Representatives have expressed heated discussions against the resolution to honor Kirk. Representative Jasmine Crocket from Texas has declared her intention to vote against the House resolution, stating that she is 'not sure what is honorable' in many past statements by Kirk.
Despite the controversy, Representative Jimmy Patronis declared that the national day of remembrance aims to ensure Kirk's legacy lives on, inspiring future generations to defend freedom and the Constitution. The ceremony in Glendale, Arizona, and the Liberty Medal ceremony promise to be poignant and memorable events, honouring a man whose life and work continue to resonate deeply in American politics.
