Recognition obtained by the trustee of a charitable organization promoting sailing for children
Petrina Blomeley, a trustee at the Welsh sailing charity All Afloat, has been recognised with an Impact Award by RYA Cymru Wales for her dedication to supporting water-based activities that transform young lives through sailing and boating.
Since its inception 8 years ago, All Afloat has been committed to providing inclusive sailing and boating opportunities for young people across Wales, regardless of background or ability. Under Petrina's guidance, the charity has supported over 3,500 young people in more than 4,500 sailing sessions, enabling them to achieve RYA certificates like Introduction to Sailing, Stages 1 and 2, and Dinghy Instructor qualifications.
Petrina believes that sailing teaches vital life skills such as confidence, self-reliance, teamwork, and physical literacy. She has observed how participation in boating programs allows young people to build positive peer networks and find role models through older participants who progress to assistant instructor roles, thereby positively impacting their futures.
In addition to her work with All Afloat, Petrina led the development of sailing and watersports as part of the curriculum at Rydal Penrhos School's RYA Training Centre from 2017 to 2024. She also contributed to the wider watersports community as Secretary of Conwy Sailing and Watersports, and continues to serve as note-taker for RYA Cymru Wales North Regional meetings.
Petrina Blomeley, who joined the All Afloat board in 2020, brings over 40 years of business administration experience to her role. Her commitment to expanding the charity's environmental education efforts is evident, as she is in her final year of a BSc in Environmental Science with The Open University.
The RYA Cymru Wales Impact Awards recognise the hard work of individuals and organisations supporting activities on the water in Wales, including participants, staff, volunteers, instructors, coaches, race officials, clubs, classes, and centres.
