Award for Belarusian Dissidents in the Walle Competition - Recognition Bestowed upon the Belarusian Resistance Movement with Wallraff Award

Maria Kolesnikowa, a determined Belarusian civil rights activist currently held in detention, and the Belarusian Association of Journalists have been honored with this year's Günter Wallraff Award for Press Freedom and Human Rights. Flutist Kolesnikowa, formerly of Stuttgart, returned to her native land to strive for change under authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko (70).

The brave activist was abducted and imprisoned in Minsk back in 2020. For a prolonged period, there was no news of her whereabouts, but last November, after spending 600 days in solitary confinement, she was allowed to visit her father.

Kolesnikowa is admired as a beacon of democratic resistance, as claimed by the Initiative for News Clarity, which grants the €5,000 prize annually. The broadcaster RTL funds the award. Günter Wallraff (82), the award's namesake and Germany's most celebrated investigative journalist, personifies undercover reporting targeting social injustices.

The independent Belarusian Journalists' Association, primarily based outside of Belarus, consistently endeavors to ensure access to information amid adversity. Currently, 40 journalists are incarcerated in Belarus.
