Germany's Economic Downfall in 2024: A Tough Year Ahead
The pro-business Institute of the German Economy (IW) has painted a gloomy picture for Germany's economic future. The institute predicts that the nation will endure a recession in 2024, with a decline in GDP of nearly half a percent according to their latest economic forecast. This prediction is an unfortunate follow-up to the IW's earlier forecast in April, which also suggested that Germany was in a recession this year.
The general economic climate in Germany remains unsteady. The ongoing dispute over the federal budget has left companies uncertain, causing many to postpone their investment decisions. Moreover, the geopolitical situation is still tense, with global trade only expected to grow by one percent in 2024. This unstable situation is particularly harsh on Germany's export-oriented economy.
Construction activity in 2022 has fallen below the 2019 level due to high interest rates and costs. Unfortunately, the IW's researchers do not anticipate interest rates to drop, meaning the construction industry is bracing for another weak year in 2024.
On a positive note, the service economy looks set to improve slightly in 2024. The IW predicts that inflation will not rise above three percent, and households will have a bit more disposable income. However, unemployment is forecasted to rise to six percent according to the IW's calculations.
Additional Insights
Structural weaknesses have troubled Germany's economy since 2018, and insufficient reforms and investment in infrastructure have only intensified these issues. Additionally, intense global competition, particularly in manufacturing industries, has affected Germany's export-oriented economy. The country's dependence on foreign demand, particularly from China, has also diminished as a source of demand.
Moreover, the high energy costs due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, along with inflation and tight fiscal policy, have had a detrimental impact on the nation's economic growth.
Additional Reads
Despite the IW's hope for a recovery in 2024, their latest forecast predicts a challenging economic year following a year of recession. The institute's predictions suggest that the geopolitical uncertainty and weak global trade will continue to impact Germany's export-oriented economy, making 2024 a tough year for the nation's economy.
