The vast majority of tourism businesses ravaged by the Ahr flood in the summer of 2021 have managed to reemerge, according to the Rhineland-Palatinate state government. Officials from various political parties, including Alexander Schweitzer (SPD), Daniela Schmitt of the FDP, and Katrin Eder (Greens), are set to discuss the development of tourism in the region at the State Chancellery in Mainz on Tuesday at 1:30 PM.
The flood disaster claimed 135 lives in the Ahr valley, leaving thousands of homes in ruins and essential infrastructure washed away. A consequent initiative, "We AHR open," aimed to encourage tourists to revisit the valley.
Reports from the State Chancellery in Mainz highlight a steady increase in the number of lodging options and overnight stays in the valley. While the number of beds dwindled from around 8,400 in 2019 to approximately 3,800 in 2022 - right after the flood - it has bounced back to around 6,200 beds currently. The number of overnight stays has also seen a considerable increase, going from around 434,000 in 2022 to approximately 760,000 last year.
