Reason for lack of complete Team GB participation in the 2023 Track Nations Cup event
The Great Britain Cycling Team has announced its eight-rider squad for the UCI Track Nations Cup in Konya, Turkey, taking place from 14-16 March. Due to scheduling conflicts and a strategic focus on other priority events, a reduced team will be attending this year's event.
The team consists of Matthew Richardson, an Olympic silver medallist, and Harry Radford, both representing the men's sprint category. In the women's sprint, we have Lauren Bell and Rhian Edmunds, who is a recent European triple silver medallist. The men's endurance category will be represented by Ben Wiggins, an Olympic silver medallist, and Ollie Wood. Lowri Thomas completes the team in the women's endurance category.
Unfortunately, there will be no British women's endurance riders competing in Konya this year. This decision appears to be part of a broader strategic focus on the UCI World Championships in October, for which Great Britain has already qualified a full team.
It is not uncommon for nations to send reduced teams to events to save funds. In this instance, Great Britain is not alone. Belgium has sent seven riders, and Ireland has sent two, while Australia has opted to field a full contingent of 16 riders.
The UCI Nations Cup in Konya does not offer qualifying points for LA 2028, which may contribute to the strategic decisions made by participating nations. Jon Norfolk, Great Britain Cycling Team head coach, stated that if there were three Nations Cups, they would have attended more than one event, but the current situation allows for more training time and focus on longer-term goals like the World Championships.
The Great Britain Cycling Team was awarded £30,125,000 in funding for the current Los Angeles Olympics cycle. This funding will undoubtedly be instrumental in supporting the team's preparation for major events like the UCI World Championships and the upcoming Olympics.
The UCI Track Nations Cup in Konya will be shown on Max and Discovery+. Let's cheer on our British athletes as they compete in this prestigious event!
