In a significant move for the European battery industry, the Californian start-up Lyten has acquired the bankrupt Swedish battery maker Northvolt. This takeover, announced in August 2025, offers a lifeline to Europe's strategic autonomy in battery technology.
The deal includes Northvolt's key assets such as the Northvolt Ett gigafactory in Skellefteå, Sweden, the Northvolt Labs battery innovation campus in Västerås, and the Northvolt Drei gigafactory project in Heide, Germany.
