Real Madrid-OM's controversial penalty call: media in Madrid concur that the penalty awarded to Medina was unwarranted

In the thrilling match between Real Madrid and Marseille, a second penalty was awarded to the Spanish giants in the 79th minute, sparking a heated debate among football officials and pundits.

Referee consultant Iturralde González considered the penalty as not a clear-cut decision, but still whistleable. This nuanced opinion stands in contrast to other referees' views, as Iturralde González took into account the player's movement when the hand movement occurred.

The incident occurred when Vinicius attempted a hook on the left side against Facundo Medina. Medina countered the move, but his hand touched the ball while he was on the ground. The controversial decision brought Real Madrid level with Bayern Munich, who currently hold the second-most penalties in the Champions League, one less than Real Madrid's record of 63.

Mateu Lahoz, another former referee, estimated that Medina should not have been sanctioned. He believed that Medina did what he had to do, and his arm served to balance. Contrastingly, former international referee Alfonso Pérez Burrull estimated that the penalty was not justified.

The Barcelona daily, Mundo Deportivo, suggests a different treatment of Real Madrid in the Champions League compared to La Liga. This ironic observation comes amidst Real Madrid's complaints about referees in La Liga and their apparent advantage in the Champions League.

Meanwhile, the first penalty of the match was scored by Kylian Mbappé in the 29th minute against Marseille. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving both teams eager for the return leg.

Mateu Lahoz, however, thought that there should never have been a penalty awarded to Real Madrid. He argued that players would injure themselves more if they can't lean on their arms when they fall.

Despite the controversy, the second penalty against Marseille has added another chapter to the intriguing story of Real Madrid's dominance in the Champions League. As the competition progresses, it will be interesting to see how this debate unfolds and how it may impact future matches.
