"Bracing for Potential Threats" – German Brigadier General in Lithuania: "We're Ready for All Possibilities"

Ready for any scenario: German General in Lithuania affirms readiness

By 2027, a German army brigade is planned to become completely operational in Lithuania. For the first time in the annals of the German Army, as many as 5,000 German soldiers could permanently call Lithuania home, marking a significant presence on NATO's Eastern frontier.

Brigadier General Christoph Huber takes the reins in leading the establishment of this new German army brigade in Lithuania. In an interview with T-online, he articulates the gravity of the threat level in the Baltic NATO states, describing it as "very high". Since September of last year, Huber has been spearheading the brigade's development. "Here, we're defending NATO territory," Huber asserts, underlining the importance of the German Army's presence. The upcoming armored brigade will witness more German soldiers deployed overseas than ever before.

Addressing potential threats emanating from Russia, Huber remarks, "We're readying ourselves for all possibilities." Exercises and training are crafted to counter adversarial abilities. "We're demonstrating our mettle," Huber said, emphasizing their professional acumen, sending a strong message to Russia.

Collaborating closely with Lithuania, the brigade's exercises are progressing smoothly, and they express optimism about fulfilling their mission to safeguard "every inch" of NATO territory by 2027, according to Huber. He also called for a transformation of the German Army: "We must prepare for the conflict of the future." This necessitates a versatile mix of capabilities: battle-equipped ground forces, robust drone defenses, and secure IT infrastructures.

The Lithuanian brigade is being established by Germany to counter the escalating threats to NATO from Russia. The combat unit held its inauguration on May 22, in the Lithuanian capital, graced by Chancellor Merz and Defense Minister Pistorius.

Come 2027, the brigade aims to be fully operational, becoming the first major German Army unit to be permanently stationed abroad. Up to 5,000 German soldiers could be permanently positioned in the country, patrolling the NATO Eastern frontier that borders Russia's exclave of Kaliningrad and its ally Belarus.
