RB Leipzig must do without national player Baku in the cup - RB Leipzig’s injury crisis tests depth ahead of Magdeburg cup showdown

RB Leipzig is grappling with injuries as it prepares to face Magdeburg in the DFB-Pokal. Five players, including defender Ridle Baku, will sit out due to fitness issues. Leipzig's coach, Timo Werner, must now make tough decisions to shore up the defense.

This encounter marks the first-ever meeting between the two sides in the cup competition, adding intrigue to the clash.

Leipzig's defensive woes have deepened with Baku's ankle injury. He joins Amadou Haidara Ouédraogo, Assan Ouédraogo, El Chadaille Bitshiabu, Rómulo, and Timo Werner on the injury list. This forces Werner to rethink his back four for the trip to Magdeburg.

Lukas Klostermann and Kosta Nedeljković are likely candidates to fill in. Nedeljković, a versatile player who combines defensive and attacking prowess, would step in if Klostermann is unavailable. Meanwhile, Maarten Vandevoordt will start in goal for the third consecutive cup game, replacing Péter Gulácsi.

Magdeburg enters the match with a strong cup pedigree. The club won a European trophy in 1974 and famously knocked out Bayern Munich and 1. FC Köln during a 2000 cup run. Despite their lower-league status, they pose a challenge for Leipzig's depleted side.

The injury crisis leaves Leipzig with limited defensive options for the cup tie. Werner must rely on Klostermann or Nedeljković to fortify the backline. Magdeburg, with its proud cup history, will aim to capitalize on Leipzig's vulnerabilities in their first-ever DFB-Pokal encounter.
