A Rare 1920s Steiff Dutch Rabbit Finds a New Home

A 100-year-old Steiff Dutch rabbit, dating back to the years 1924 to 1927, was recently sold on the popular German TV show Bares für Rares for 350 euros. The rabbit, a testament to the craftsmanship of the renowned German company Steiff, is a prized collectible among vintage toy enthusiasts.

Steiff, known for producing high-quality stuffed animals, especially bears and rabbits, since the early 20th century, is celebrated for its mohair fabric, glass eyes, velveteen ears, and the distinctive "FF" button in the ear, marking their authenticity and high craftsmanship.

The 1920s Steiff rabbits are particularly rare and valuable due to their historical significance and the brand's reputation. Measuring around 9 to 12 inches tall, these rabbits were made with early-style fillings that may have loosened over time but still retain their shape well. Their condition, original components like glass eyes and the "FF" button, and their age contribute to their collectible value.

The rabbit in question, referred to as a "Dutch rabbit," was a real child of the traditional Steiff family, born in the early 1920s. Its eccentric wheels, a great innovation at the time, allow it to hop when pulled. The rabbit has been well-preserved, showing signs of love and care it received over the years.

The rabbit was in the possession of an elderly lady for many years before being sold. Its new owner, Jos van Katwijk, a Dutchman, is a fitting custodian for this Dutch rabbit. The rabbit had been on a shelf for ten years before finding a new home.

The desired price for the rabbit is 400 euros, with a realistic range of 350 to 400 euros, reflecting its rarity and condition. The rabbit is now looking for a new home, ready to continue its journey as a cherished collectible.

The Bares für Rares episode featuring the sale of the 1920s Steiff Dutch rabbit brought a sense of excitement and nostalgia. The mood brightened when a vendor couple entered the studio, and the sale was completed without incident.

This sale serves as a reminder of the enduring appeal of vintage Steiff toys and their significant role in the history and development of soft toys globally. For collectors, these toys are not just toys but pieces of history, each with its own story to tell.
