Rapper A$AP Rocky lands new acting role, album release, and impending child with Rihanna.
A$AP Rocky's Shining Moment
From co-chairing the Met Gala to starring alongside Denzel Washington in the upcoming crime drama "Highest 2 Lowest," A$AP Rocky is making waves.
The rapper and entrepreneur opened up to Variety about his experiences on the Spike Lee-directed film, which provided a welcome distraction during his recent trial. Charged with assault with a semiautomatic firearm stemming from a 2021 shooting incident with a former friend in Los Angeles, Rocky found solace in acting.
"That's my only escape," he admitted. "That's why I do it."
Being found not guilty in February, Rocky encountered a familiar character in "Highest 2 Lowest" - Yung Felon, a character with some legal troubles. Embracing life imitating art, Rocky immersed himself in the role, drawing upon his real-life experiences.
"That's why I was able to embody the character so well," he said. "I was able to act like a piece of s**t who was going away for a long time but didn't realize the consequences, because in real life, I knew exactly what the consequences felt like."
Working with Washington, an Oscar-winning legend, was aGame-changer for Rocky, who revealed that Washington "plays more Memphis rap than anybody I know." Sharing his intentions to act with longtime partner, Rihanna, the couple anticipates the birth of their third child.
"After" not guilty, Rocky rushed into Rihanna's arms, feeling "happy and wanting to get the f**k out that building." Expressing gratitude towards the judge, his team, his family, and his mom, Rocky credited prayer for his acquittal.
With a new album, "Don't Be Dumb," and the release of "Highest 2 Lowest" on the horizon, Rocky's focus is clearly on the future. Set to hit theaters on August 22 and stream on Apple TV+ two weeks later, Rocky plans to enjoy the film in a theater.
"Cinema is just a portal to an imagination, depicted by somebody else," he mused. "You get to see somebody else's dream. It's almost like a filmmaker is a God in his own right."
Interestingly, "Highest 2 Lowest" is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on August 22, 2025, distributed by A24. The film will be available for streaming exclusively on Apple TV+ beginning September 5, 2025. This neo-noir crime thriller, directed by Spike Lee, also stars Denzel Washington. It's a modern reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa's classic High and Low, set in contemporary New York City.
