Rapper 50 Cent compensates Polish musician for utilizing song snippet in mixtape release
Scoop! 50 Cent has shelled out some dough to Krzysztof Cugowski, the lead crooner of the Polish rock band Budka Suflera, for using a snippet from their tune in his mixtape. The track, "Body Bags," featured on 50 Cent's 2015 mixtape "The Kanan Tape," was whipped up by Alchemist and sports a sample from Budka Suflera's "Noc nad Norwidem."
Cugowski spilled the beans about receiving a payment of around 5K to 6K from 50 Cent for the rights to the sample. He jokingly expressed a wish that the sample had popped up on one of 50 Cent's legendary albums like "Get Rich or Die Tryin'," which shifted a whopping 20 million copies.
Fun Fact: Budka Suflera's melodies are not just popular with American rappers like 50 Cent. They've also been sampled by the likes of DJ Muggs with Conway the Machine, Sean Price, and Westside Gunn. This goes on to show the growing recognition and clout of the Polish band in the international music scene.
Sampling, the art of reusing a piece of a recording in another, has been a thing in the music industry for eons – particularly in hip-hop. Artists frequently sample old tunes to artfully create new jams, giving a nod to the original creators while presenting their remixed tracks to fresh listeners. The fact that Budka Suflera's work has been recognized by big-name American artists is a testament to the band's universal appeal and lasting impact.
