The upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, scheduled for Friday in Alaska, will focus on discussions about the ongoing Ukraine crisis. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will not be attending the summit in Alaska[1].

Instead, following a lengthy phone call with President Trump, Zelensky announced he will travel to Washington, D.C. on Monday to meet with Trump there[1]. This separate meeting is set to take place after the Alaskan summit.

At the Alaska meeting, Presidents Trump and Putin will discuss cooperation and the Ukraine crisis. The leaders have emphasized the need for a ceasefire before further discussions[1].

Sen. Lindsey Graham has expressed a desire for Ukraine to be part of the peace talks, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has reiterated the European position that any discussions on Ukrainian territory must involve Ukraine and Europe[1].

The US and Russian presidents are hoping for significant progress during their discussions. Trump has expressed a willingness to end the war, even if it isn't ultimately successful[1].

In a move that could potentially reshape the eastern regions of Ukraine, Putin's meeting with Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff last week involved a proposal that would give Moscow control of Ukraine's entire Donbas region[1]. However, the fate of the regions Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, and the status of US security guarantees going forward, remain unclear.

The European leaders have proposed reciprocity in any land concessions, suggesting that if Ukraine cedes territory, Russia must also withdraw from other parts of Ukraine[1].

Trump's aides are seeking buy-in from European nations on the president's peace efforts. Vice President Harris acknowledged that both sides of the conflict may not be entirely satisfied with the peace negotiations' outcome[1].

Vice President Harris has also stated that the negotiation effort is nonetheless worthwhile. Two European officials felt Vance was receptive to their viewpoints and actively engaged their ideas[1].

Ukrainian President Zelensky believes the US is listening to his arguments and is prepared to travel to Alaska if invited by Trump[1]. However, as of Monday, no venue for the summit has been announced.

  1. The ongoing discussions about the Ukraine crisis, encompassing war-and-conflicts, policy-and-legislation, and general news, will extend beyond the summit between Presidents Trump and Putin in Alaska, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky plans to meet with Trump in Washington, D.C.
  2. While the upcoming US-Russia summit in Alaska focuses on the Ukraine crisis, Ukrainian politics could potentially be reshaped through negotiations outside of the summit, such as Putin's proposal for Moscow to control Ukraine's entire Donbas region, and European politics will play a significant role in shaping any land concessions or US security guarantees going forward.
