Rapid snowmelt disrupts ski resorts as rain replaces winter wonderland

Last weekend saw several mountain railways opening for the season. Skier turnout was strong on Saturday, with ideal snow conditions reported. But by Sunday, heavy rain turned snow to slush in resorts above 2,000 metres, including Hoch-Ybrig, where overnight downpours caused temporary disruptions.

The coming weeks will bring unusually mild weather, with no snowfall forecast until late December at the earliest. Resorts at higher altitudes remain operational, but lower slopes face patchy cover. Long-term trends suggest continued snow loss, particularly in glacier-dependent regions like the Alps and Andes.
