In a tragic turn of events, a fire at the newly opened Corniche Hypermarket mall in Kut, Wasit province, eastern Iraq, has claimed at least 69 lives and left dozens injured. The fire, which occurred on July 16, 2025, has shed light on critical issues with fire safety regulations and enforcement in the country.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but authorities have pointed to the lack of implemented fire safety measures as a major factor in the high death toll. The mall, which houses shops, restaurants, and a supermarket, reportedly lacked emergency exit stairways, fire extinguishers, fire alarms, and adhered to poor building safety standards.

Investigations reveal that the mall's owner apparently failed to apply for or obtain required permits and did not enforce necessary safety protocols. Previous safety violations had resulted in the closure of a restaurant originally in the building, yet it is unclear how permission was granted to convert the building into a complex with multiple floors, including a restaurant on the top floor.

Following the tragedy, local authorities have suspended officials responsible for occupational and municipal safety during ongoing investigations. Committees have been formed to inspect the safety of other buildings to prevent similar disasters.

Similar deadly fire incidents in Iraq in recent years, such as hospital fires and wedding hall fires in 2021 and 2023, point to systemic shortcomings in fire safety regulations enforcement and emergency preparedness in public buildings.

Meanwhile, in Japan, a man was arrested for attempting to set fire to go-karts due to noise-related stress. The man, reportedly told investigators that he was "stressed out by the engine noise of the go-karts." The incident took place at the newly opened Hyper Mall.

In another unrelated incident, two stars of the Harry Potter films, Emma Watson and Zoe Wanamaker, were each banned from driving for six months. Wanamaker was caught driving 74kph in a 64kph zone in southeastern Berkshire in August last year, while Watson was caught speeding 61kph in a 48kph zone in southeastern Banbury in July last year.

The US Geological Survey issued a tsunami warning following a magnitude 7.3 earthquake that occurred off the coast of Alaska on Wednesday. The earthquake, centered about 87km south of the island town of Sand Point, had a relatively shallow depth of 20km. However, the warning was later withdrawn.

In Iraq, the Ministry of the Interior issued a statement regarding the fire, expressing condolences and promising to hold those responsible accountable. The investigation into the Kut mall fire has uncovered serious violations and negligence in fire safety regulation compliance that contributed to the catastrophe. Authorities have vowed legal action against responsible parties as the country grapples with enforcing stringent fire safety standards to prevent future tragedies.
