SPD Leader Lars Klingbeil outlines party's agenda in press conference
    • 6 Min

It's a new chapter for the German federal government. With Friedrich Merz set to become Chancellor tomorrow by the Bundestag, the SPD has finalized its personnel for the new cabinet. Unlike the CDU, SPD leader Lars Klingbeil not only maintains but exceeds gender parity in the appointments.

Apart from Boris Pistorius, all nominees are fresh blood in the federal cabinet, although some have prior government experience at the state level. It's worth noting that Klingbeil's co-chair Saskia Esken wasn't considered, which may lead to some heated debates. Let's dive into the designated ministers.

Finance: Lars Klingbeil

As the coalition's treasurer, Klingbeil, 47, will control the funds from the infrastructure special loans. However, his biggest challenge will be implementing the announced savings to prove himself as a diligent budget manager and avoid squandering billions. Klingbeil faces a tough start, having to present two federal budgets (for 2025 and 2026) right away. The coalition's policies, including its approach to finances, will be Klingbeil's first test.

As a first-time finance minister, Klingbeil's prospects compared to his predecessor aren't too shabby. As finance minister and vice-chancellor, a certain Olaf Scholz paved the way for the SPD's chancellor candidacy.

Labor and Social Affairs: Bärbel Bas

Bas, 56, will take over from Hubertus Heil after his eight-year tenure. Key responsibilities for Bas include the citizen’s income reform and pension policy. While these issues are core SPD subjects, the election results revealed that there was more to lose than gain on these topics.

Prior to her political career, Bas gained valuable experience in the workforce, starting as a welder and rising to a management position at the Duisburger Verkehrsgesellschaft. She’s made a name for herself as a health politician and was elected parliamentary president in 2021. A football fan of MSV Duisburg and rider of a Harley-Davidson Low Rider, Bas has established a strong reputation within the SPD.

Defense: Boris Pistorius

Pistorius, 65, will continue as Federal Defense Minister, a position he considers his favorite. He played a significant role in the so-called Zeitenwende (time of change) following Russia's attack on Ukraine in February 2022, aiming to make Germany combat-ready. With wide popular support, Pistorius faces the challenge of expanding and modernizing the Bundeswehr while managing significant military spending thanks to the opening clause for military expenditures in the Basic Law.

Environment: Carsten Schneider

Despite being considered young in politics at 49, Schneider is a veteran in the Berlin scene. He entered the Bundestag in 1998 and has remained a constant presence. Schneider was initially considered for the Minister of Construction position but was overlooked due to parity reasons. Instead, he became State Secretary and Commissioner for the East in the Chancellery with a cabinet seat, more staff, and growing self-confidence.

Now, Schneider has been appointed Minister for the Environment and Climate, although he has limited expertise in the subject matter. Klingbeil, a close friend of Schneider, reportedly trusts Schneider's professionalism to manage this more challenging topic effectively and meet the party's demand for East representation.

Justice: Stefanie Hubig

Hubig, 56, returns to Berlin after a successful career as Minister of Education in Mainz. With experience as a judge, public prosecutor, and politician, Hubig is well-prepared for her new role. Nevertheless, she faces difficult tasks due to the planned family law reform and regulation of the withdrawal of the passive right to vote after multiple convictions for incitement to hatred.

Building and Housing: Verena Hubertz

Hubertz, 37, continues her rapid political ascent, joining the SPD cabinet as a representative of the "generational change" promoted by Klingbeil. As a startup founder, she entered the Bundestag for the first time in 2021 and was elected as one of the deputy faction leaders. Considered an economic expert with a digital affinity, Hubertz is responsible for the inherited goal of constructing 400,000 apartments per year in her new position. Despite the challenging inheritance, Hubertz has much to gain and much to lose in this crucial role.

Development Aid: Reem Alabali-Radovan

A surprise in the cabinet, Alabali-Radovan, 35, joins the federal government as Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, previously serving as State Minister for Migration in the Chancellery and Commissioner for Anti-Racism. Born in Moscow to Iraqi parents and seeking asylum in Germany in 1996, Alabali-Radovan has effectively navigated her diverse background into a successful political career. A boxer at BS Traktor Berlin and a proven fighter in her professional life, Alabali-Radovan will undoubtedly bring a unique perspective to her new role.

  1. The Commission, having been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of the environment, may find a supportive ally in Carsten Schneider, the newly appointed Minister for the Environment and Climate, given his close friendship with SPD leader Lars Klingbeil.
  2. Announcing General-News: Despite the SPD having a history of vocal representation of labor and social affairs, there are concerns that Bärbel Bas's focus on core SPD subjects like pension policy and the citizen’s income reform might result in losses due to the recent election results, especially as these issues were perceived as воло✅deployable Kings👑 in SPD politics.
  3. As Chancellor Friedrich Merz takes office, the SPD's designation of Saskia Esken as a non-cabinet member could cause a stir within the party, potentially igniting heated debates about the distribution of power and representation within SPD politics.
  4. Midway through his career in politics, Boris Pistorius, the Federal Defense Minister, faces the challenge of expanding and modernizing the Bundeswehr in response to the so-called Zeitenwende (time of change), as Germany adapts to the shift in world politics and the increasing threats along its borders.
