Helen Briem, the 19-year-old phenom, has just returned from a grueling practice round at the infamous Green Eagle Golf Course - nicknamed the "Green Monster." A beast of a course, it's known for its protracted layout, narrow fairways, and relentless winds. Nestled 50 kilometers south of Hamburg, this challenging venue is home to the Amundi German Masters, Europe's premier event and the first professional tournament in Germany this year.

Briem, competing with the entire Ladies European Tour elite, shrugs off the external pressure, insisting that internal drive is what truly matters. "Pressure and high expectations always stem from within," she notes, before adding with a calm smile, "After all, I've only been a pro for about a year."

The Rising Star of International Women's Golf

Many expect nothing less than a triumph from Briem, as she's hailed as the most promising talent in women's golf, with some even claiming she's the best in the world[6]. Last year, she claimed the number one spot in the amateur world rankings, making her the first German to achieve that feat. As an amateur, she emerged victorious in three consecutive professional league tournaments, and at her first professional tournament on the Ladies European Tour, she, yet again, accomplished the unthinkable - a historic victory[6].

Now, Briem is gunning for the top spot at the Green Monster, albeit remaining tight-lipped about her plans, only admitting, "I know I can compete with the best, but accumulating more experience is paramount."

Briem boasts a staggering distance off the tee, besting nearly all her competitors, a result of her towering stature at 6 feet 2 inches. This has led experts to speculate that she could become one of the world's elite female golfers, potentially dominating the scene like Tiger Woods did amongst men[6]. However, Briem remains skeptical, stating, "Golf wasn't something I aspired to become professional in." In fact, she barely watched professional golf on TV until recently. Instead, her sporting icons are skiers Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn, as well as biathlete Laura Dahlmeier, with whom she's had the privilege of meeting personally[6].

Mind Over Matter: The Key to Success

The mental fortitude displayed by Briem is often acclaimed as her most significant advantage in the sport of golf. "You have to learn to win," Briem humbly admits, flashing a small, confident smile. Having played in numerous competitive tournaments since she was a child, she's become accustomed to climbing to the top[6]. A common occurrence is her bold start, usually beginning with a birdie on the first hole, a powerful bargaining chip that can unsettle her rivals from the get-go[1]. However, the ultimate outcome is decided only on the final hole, the last putt. "It takes patience and the ability to read your competition," says Briem[6].

Her father Jochen, a 55-year-old entrepreneur with a handicap of 10, first introduced Helen to golf when she was just three years old. Since she began her competitive golf career, he's been by her side as a caddy. Their epic adventures led them to attend a ski world cup race in Garmisch, where they even got to meet ski star Lindsay Vonn[6].

Balancing Success and Academics

Despite her athletic achievements, Briem excelled in her studies, managing to graduate with a 1.9 in her Abitur, Germany's high school diploma, last year. Shortly after, she transitioned to the professional ranks, although that wasn't part of the plan. "Every start expanded my horizons, and eventually, I took the leap," she says[6]. However, she has no plans to emulate Bernhard Langer, the ageless golfing legend, who's still active well into his seventies. "That's not the goal," she clarifies, adding that she has a deep fondness for skiing and requires a "Plan B" after golf[6].

To keep her mind engaged, Briem enrolled in a part-time pharmaceutical technology program at the University of Albstadt/Sigmaringen since autumn last year. "It's beneficial for my mind to focus on something other than sports," she notes. With around 20 tournament weeks a year and extensive international travel, discipline is essential. "But Helen can decide how much she wants to study," asserts her father[6].

Recently, Briem encountered an unusual challenge during a tournament in Tenerife. Assigned a late tee time, she utilized the spare moments to complete a math test. Did she ace it? "Of course," she states confidently. Despite the distraction, she ended the tournament in second place[6]. Now, she aspires to conquer the Green Monster, even though she acknowledges that some of her peers are capable of clinching the win with "four consistent days."

The Road to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games

Overcoming the Green Monster and collecting valuable points is essential if Briem hopes to secure a spot on the German Olympic team for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. Officially considered Germany's best hope in the women's golf event, Briem regards the Olympics as the ultimate prize[6]. "However, I don't have a definitive plan. I take things one step at a time," she modestly says[6]. "The Olympics is my ultimate goal; it's the final step."

Other sports, including skiing, have fascinated Helen Briem, with skiers Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn, as well as biathlete Laura Dahlmeier, being among her icons.

Even with her impressive distance off the tee, golf was not a professional sport Briem aspired to pursue; instead, she considers a career in pharmaceutical technology as her Plan B.
