Rangers sign top prospect Drew Fortescue to three-year NHL deal
The New York Rangers have signed defenseman Drew Fortescue to a three-year, entry-level contract. General manager Chris Drury confirmed the deal, marking the next step for the young player after a standout college career.
Fortescue, 20, was drafted by the Rangers in the third round (90th overall) of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. No other NHL team had selected him before the Rangers took a chance on his potential.
Before turning professional, Fortescue spent three seasons at Boston College, where he played 112 games and recorded 33 points (eight goals, 25 assists). This past season, he achieved a career-high 11 assists and finished with a plus-28 rating, tying for seventh among all NCAA skaters in that category.
In his freshman year (2023-24), he contributed eight points (four goals, four assists) across 40 games. By his final college season, he ranked second in goals and third in assists and points among Boston College defensemen.
Internationally, Fortescue has been a consistent performer for Team USA. He won gold at the U18 World Championship in 2023 and the U17 event in 2022. More recently, he helped secure back-to-back gold medals at the U20 World Junior Championship in 2024 and 2025.
The Rangers drafted him after his strong showings at both the collegiate and international levels. His defensive skills and offensive contributions made him a valuable prospect for the franchise.
Fortescue now transitions from college hockey to the professional ranks with the Rangers. His three-year contract gives him time to develop within the organisation. The team will look to his experience in high-pressure games as he prepares for the next stage of his career.
