Rammstein Tour 2020: Sensational Live Performance Illuminated by Robe Stage Lighting
Rammstein's latest tours in 2019 and 2020 showcased a visually explosive concert experience, characterised by complex lighting systems, intense pyrotechnics, and fireworks. The band's performances are known for their multi-level staging, giant industrial fans, lasers, smoke, and elaborate pyrotechnics, all tightly synchronized with the music and performance.
While the specific lighting brands or models used in these tours are not detailed explicitly, it is clear that the equipment was chosen to enhance the fiery industrial atmosphere and withstand the rigorous demands of pyrotechnics. The lighting must be capable of producing high-impact visuals visible to large stadium audiences.
The lighting design for Rammstein's tour included 56 ROBE BMFL WashBeams, 12 BMFL Follow Spot LT, and 6 LEDBeam 150 Moving Lights. BMFL WashBeams were chosen for their excellent brightness and versatility, suitable for backlighting, beam effects, and set architecture highlighting. The BMFL Follow Spot LTs on the FOH delay towers were designed for long-distance applications and can be remotely controlled during the live show by a Follow-Me system. The LEDBeam 150 Moving Lights were placed directly above the band, providing compact, bright, and zoom-equipped spotlights.
A central tower with a transparent video wall was part of the set design, moving up and down and equipped with BMFL WashBeams and strobes. Each vertical rail of the central tower had individual weather protection for added durability.
The technical aspects of the design and integration were handled by Jeremy Lloyd from Wonder Works. Rammstein collaborated with Roland Greil and Patrick Woodroffe for the lighting, stage, and video design of their 2019 and 2020 tour. Florian Wieder from wieder design and Cuno from Hahn were responsible for the set design.
The integration of all light, sound, and video effects required close cooperation between the participants. Greil expressed pleasure in being part of the Rammstein show, as they had the freedom to produce something unique and spectacular. Greil emphasised that dealing with the complexity and scope of the Rammstein show was the biggest challenge, but having a great team made it possible to achieve spectacular results.
