Cebu Politicians Take on Leadership Roles in National and Local Government

In a series of recent developments, two Cebu-based politicians have taken on significant leadership roles within the Philippine government.

Rep. Eduardo "Edu" Rama Jr., representing Cebu City's 2nd District, was appointed as the deputy majority leader of the 20th Congress. His appointment, announced on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2025, via a Facebook post, follows the opening sessions in late July and early August. Rama joins Rep. Jose "Bong" Teves Jr. (TGP Party-list), Rep. Munir Arbison Jr. (Sulu, 2nd District), and Rep. Eduardo Rama as one of the deputy majority leaders of the 20th Congress. The senior deputy majority leader is Rep. Lorenz Defensor (Iloilo, 3rd District), elected in late July 2025.

Meanwhile, in local politics, Cordova Mayor Cesar "Didoy" Suan was elected as the president of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines Cebu chapter on Friday, Aug. 8. The election took place at Seda Ayala Center Cebu. Suan received unanimous support from all 44 municipal mayors in the province, making him the lone nominee for the position. He succeeds former Daanbantayan mayor Sun Shimura, who now represents Cebu's 4th District.

In a statement, Rep. Rama expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him by his colleagues in the House of Representatives. His Facebook post, written in Cebuano, highlighted his commitment to continuing to serve and support policies that will improve the lives of all Filipinos.

Suan, on the other hand, expressed his excitement and commitment to serving as the president of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines Cebu chapter. He thanked his fellow mayors for their trust and support, and pledged to work tirelessly to advance the interests of municipalities in Cebu.

These leadership positions are a testament to the strong representation that Cebu has in the national and local government, and bode well for the future of the province and the country as a whole.
