Rally spearheaded by Canino fails for Alas, as Thais maintain their unbeaten record in the SEA V. League
Thailand Maintains Dominance in SEA V League
In the world of Southeast Asian volleyball, the SEA V League has become a battleground for regional powerhouses. In the ongoing tournament, Thailand has continued its impressive run, maintaining an unbeaten streak.
During Week 1 of the 2021 SEA V League, Thailand showcased its dominance, winning all matches, including a crucial 3-2 victory over Vietnam in the final match of the leg. This victory was part of a high-stakes single round-robin tournament featuring Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia.
The Philippines, too, have been in action, competing against Indonesia for the bronze medals in Week 1, with the Philippines winning convincingly. In subsequent stages of the tournament held in 2025, the Philippines and Indonesia faced off once more, with the Philippines sweeping Indonesia 3–0 for third place, after Vietnam and Thailand battled for the title.
Thailand, however, has remained unbeaten since the inception of the SEA V League in 2019. The Southeast Asian powerhouse has won 26 consecutive matches, including eight leg championships. The Philippines, on the other hand, have yet to taste victory in the current season, having lost both matches so far.
The match between the Philippines and Thailand was characterised by alternating fortunes. The Philippines nearly won the first set but lost it eventually. The third set, however, saw a 5-2 swing in favour of the Philippines, thanks to the efforts of Angel Canino, a former UAAP MVP and a three-time international awardee. Canino scored four crucial points, helping the Philippines to win the set with a score of 26-24.
Despite the Philippines' efforts, Thailand managed to win the fourth set, dominating it with a score of 13-6, after leading 12-10. This win secured Thailand's victory over Alas Pilipinas Women with scores of 25-22, 25-17, 24-26, and 25-16.
Vietnam has also come close to winning multiple times in previous matches against Thailand, but has not yet been successful. As the second leg of the SEA V League continues, the competition remains intense, with the Philippines scheduled to face Indonesia on August 10, 5 pm Manila time. The outcome of this match could determine the Philippines' position in the tournament.
During the ongoing SEA V League, the Philippines and the world of basketball might find an interesting parallel, as they both aim to challenge Thailand's dominance. In a hypothetical basketball match between these two teams, perhaps the Philippines could employ the heavy defensive strategies and impressive runs demonstrated by Angel Canino in their recent volleyball clash. However, Thailand's unbeaten streak in the SEA V League suggests that their basketball counterparts might face a formidable foe, much like the volleyball team's recent 3-2 victory over Vietnam.
