Rally of Finland winner: Rovanpera thrills local spectators with triumph

In a thrilling turn of events at the 2025 Rally Finland, Toyota driver Kalle Rovanperä secured his first-ever home victory, marking a significant milestone in his career. This triumph moves Rovanperä, aged 24 and the current world champion for 2022/23, into a strong position in the World Rally Championship (WRC) series.

Rovanperä's win came after a fierce competition with his fellow Toyota Gazoo Racing teammates, Japan's Takamoto Katsuta and Sebastien Ogier of France. The battle was intense, but Rovanperä managed to emerge victorious, adding another feather to his cap with his 17th career victory and his second this term.

Meanwhile, the title race in the series remains close, with five races remaining. Elfyn Evans, another Toyota driver, currently leads the standings with 176 points, just ahead of Rovanperä who has 173 points. The battle between these two teammates is notably tight as the season progresses.

Sebastien Ogier, who currently lies in third place overall in the series, is 13 points behind series leader Elfyn Evans. The drivers are now gearing up for the Rally of Paraguay, which will run from August 28-31.

Unfortunately, the race was not without its challenges. Ott Tanak, a Hyundai driver, received a five-minute penalty during the rally for leaving the control zone before receiving permission from a scrutineer. This penalty caused Tanak's hopes of victory in the rally to disappear, and he ended up finishing 10th. Moreover, Tanak's hasty departure resulted in a minor injury to an official when he struck the official with his front bumper.

Despite Tanak's setback, Rovanperä's win moved him into second place in the series, three points behind series leader Elfyn Evans. Tanak's penalty also affected the title race, as Thierry Neuville, a previous champion, finished sixth in the recent rally, potentially damaging his chances of defending his crown.

As the series moves forward, the competition promises to be intense and exciting. Toyota Gazoo Racing continues to lead the manufacturers' championship with 458 points, but the drivers' championship standings are tightly contested, making every race crucial. The battle between Rovanperä and Evans is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in recent WRC history.
