Rally Competitor Rovanpera Manages to Overcome Tire Burst, Nearing Domestic Victory in Finland Event
In a thrilling conclusion to the 2025 Rally Finland, Kalle Rovanperä of Toyota emerged as the winner, marking the first Finnish victory in eight years. The young racer, alongside co-driver Jonne Halttunen, dominated the event, winning five out of eight special stages.
Two-time world champion Sebastien Ogier, driving for Citroën, put up a valiant fight but finished 42.9 seconds behind the leader. Ogier moved up from sixth to third place, with Elfyn Evans of Toyota hot on his heels, just 1.5 seconds behind.
The race was not without its dramas. Ott Tänak, the world championship leader driving for Hyundai, received a sanction for leaving the control zone before receiving permission from a scrutineer. This resulted in a five-minute penalty, effectively ending his chances of victory. Tänak's teammate, Takamoto Katsuta, finished in fourth place, 36.1 seconds behind Rovanperä.
Despite Tänak's penalties, his teammate Katsuta, and the rest of the field, Rovanperä's lead and victory were never in doubt. The official results confirm Rovanperä and Halttunen's victory, with an all-Toyota top five finish. Finland's Sami Pajari completed the top five.
The rally, contested from July 31 to August 3, 2025, consisted of 20 stages in total. Only two special stages, covering 47.96km, are scheduled for the final day of the event on Sunday.
Thierry Neuville of Belgium and Adrien Fourmaux of France, who were in sixth and seventh place respectively, were slowed by punctures. Tanak's teammate, Elfyn Evans, is under threat from Ogier for the final podium spot.
Rovanperä's victory marks a significant milestone in his career and a strong showing for Toyota. With one day left in the rally, Rovanperä has a strong chance for an overall victory on Sunday.
