Rajinikanth's film, Coolie, surpasses 4 billion rupees, questioning if it will outpace Vikram by the first week?
Celebrations were in order on the first day of the release of Coolie, marking a significant milestone in Rajinikanth's 50-year career in cinema. The film, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has been making waves at the box office, earning a net of Rs 206.50 crore and a gross of Rs 44.55 crore in India.
In its opening weekend, Coolie grossed Rs 404 crore worldwide, with a substantial Rs 157.45 crore coming from overseas box office revenues. This brings its official worldwide tally to Rs 403 crore in just five days.
Coolie currently ranks as Rajinikanth's third highest-grossing film worldwide, with its lifetime collections expected to reach between Rs 275-300 crore in India. It is aiming to surpass this figure and join the ranks of the superstar's top two highest-grossing films, 2.0 and Jailer.
In India, only 2.0 and Jailer have grossed higher than Coolie for Rajinikanth's films, with 2.0 earning Rs 407.05 crore and Jailer Rs 348.55 crore domestically. Worldwide, Coolie is close to the lifetime collections of Ponniyin Selvan Part 1 (about Rs 489.51 crore), which it might surpass soon.
Theatres across the country turned into party zones on the first day of Coolie's release, with fans queuing up as early as 2:30 am to catch a glimpse of the action. The euphoria for the film reached such heights that fans were dancing in theatres, turning the experience into a full-blown festival.
In Dubai, an office even granted a holiday for employees to watch Coolie. The film's success is not limited to India, with Coolie expected to cross Rs 495 crore or more in its lifetime domestic total, making it the fourth highest-grossing Tamil film worldwide.
To truly seal its success, Coolie needs to outgun Leo and Vikram, also directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. However, with its current pace, it seems that this may not be too far-fetched. Coolie has already surpassed the gross of Rajinikanth's movies Enthiran (2010), Darbar (2020), and Petta (2019).
In conclusion, Coolie holds a strong position as Rajinikanth’s third biggest grosser both in India and worldwide. The film is a testament to the enduring appeal of Rajinikanth and the power of a well-crafted story, making it a must-watch for fans and cinema enthusiasts alike.
