Rainstorm alerts in Hong Kong are abruptly called off just two hours after schools are suspended due to the warnings.
On Monday, the Hong Kong education authorities suspended all morning and whole-day classes due to squally thunderstorms. The city was under the influence of a band of intense thundery showers affecting the Pearl River Estuary, leading to cloudy skies with showers and occasional squally thunderstorms.
The Hong Kong Observatory had issued a red rainstorm warning signal at 1.15am, which was later cancelled less than two hours later. An amber warning was issued at 6.05am, and was cancelled at 7.20am (6.20am Thailand time). Schools were advised to implement contingency plans and arrange staff to look after students. If the warning was lowered to amber at or before 10.30am, afternoon classes would proceed as usual. No advice was given to cancel afternoon classes unless otherwise advised if the warning was lowered by 10.30am.
Over 60mm of rainfall was recorded in many places this morning, with over 100mm in the Islands district and Tuen Mun. Flooding is expected in some low-lying and poorly drained areas. Schools were told to ensure conditions are safe before allowing students to return home.
According to the weather forecaster, the weather in southern China and the northern part of the South China Sea is windy. However, following the squally thunderstorms on Monday, Hong Kong’s weather forecast for the rest of the week indicates mainly cloudy skies with a few showers and sunny intervals during the day. Temperatures will range roughly between 26 to 32 degrees Celsius with moderate humidity, and winds will be light, mostly from the east or southeast at force 3 to 4. Showers will be occasional, with sunny intervals becoming more common as the days progress.
This indicates a gradual easing of heavy rain and thunderstorms into more typical tropical weather with occasional showers and sunny breaks. People are advised to take necessary precautions to reduce their exposure to heavy rain and flooding risks.
Looking ahead to the rest of the week, the forecast for Wednesday to Sunday suggests mainly cloudy skies with a few showers and sunny intervals during the day. Temperatures will remain around 26–31°C. Monday to Tuesday will see continued mainly cloudy weather with a few showers and sunny intervals, temperatures slightly rising to 27–32°C.
In conclusion, while Hong Kong experienced some challenging weather conditions on Monday, the forecast indicates a gradual improvement in the coming days, with temperatures remaining moderate and the risk of heavy rain and thunderstorms decreasing.
