Rainfall Alert: IMD Issues Severe Warning for Sikkim, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu; Persistent Downpours Expected in Northeast, Eastern, and Southern India Regions
Heavy Rainfall Alerts Across India: IMD Forecasts Active Monsoon Conditions
India is bracing for heavy to very heavy rainfall in several regions over the next few days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The active monsoon conditions are expected to bring varied temperature patterns across the country.
Starting from August 6-7, the states of Kerala and Mahe could witness heavy to very heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu is expected to experience isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall from August 3-5. On the other hand, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa are forecasted to receive light to moderate rainfall throughout August 2-7.
In the northeast region, states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are under heavy rainfall alert. Extremely heavy rains, along with thunderstorms, are predicted for these states from August 2 to 7, with the most intense spells on August 2-3 and August 3 for Arunachal Pradesh. East and Central India, including Sikkim, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of West Bengal, are also predicted to receive very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in early August.
Central India, including eastern Madhya Pradesh, is expected to see extremely heavy isolated rainfall over the next 4-5 days, with active monsoon conditions prevailing over central parts of the country. Other areas affected by heavy rains include Uttarakhand, Gujarat region, Telangana, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Konkan & Goa, and ghat areas of Maharashtra. East Rajasthan is forecasted to have heavy showers around August 11-12.
Regarding temperature variations, the IMD’s Shimla Centre predicts normal to below-normal maximum temperatures in low hills/plains but normal to above-normal maximums in mid and high hilly areas during August in Himachal Pradesh. Minimum temperatures are expected to be normal to above normal across the state.
On a national scale, the IMD expects average monsoon rainfall for India in August, following 5% above-normal rains in July, and anticipates above-average rainfall (over 106% of the 50-year average) in September.
In addition to the heavy rainfall, several regions are under specific weather warnings. Delhi will remain under cloudy skies with frequent light to moderate spells of rain, thunderstorms, and lightning from August 2-4. The entire South Peninsula is under a strong wind warning (40-50 kmph). In Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, moderate rainfall with thunderstorms is expected from August 2-7. Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema will see isolated heavy rainfall from August 5-7.
Karnataka (Coastal and South Interior) will experience moderate to heavy rainfall from August 5-7. Uttarakhand and East Uttar Pradesh are under a warning for very heavy rainfall on August 3 and 4, and in East Rajasthan from August 3 to 7.
