Aizawl District Schools Close Due to Landslides and Heavy Rainfall

Incessant rain and landslides have disrupted life in Aizawl district, Mizoram since Wednesday, prompting school closures for the second consecutive day on Friday.

According to a notification issued by Aizawl deputy commissioner and district disaster management authority chairman Lalhriatpuia, all schools within Aizawl district were instructed to declare a holiday on Friday due to heavy inundation of rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds from May 29 to June 1. [IMD Forecast]

A severe weather event has resulted in landslides in different parts of Aizawl district and other parts of the state. Some highways have been blocked due to these landslides, causing transportation disruptions.

One noteworthy incident occurred on Friday morning when an Assam-type building was swept away by a landslide in Mauchar village near the state border with Assam and Manipur. Fortunately, there were no casualties. [Landslide in Mauchar]

Water supply has also been disrupted in Aizawl city due to increased turbidity in the river Tlawng as a result of the heavy rainfall.

State disaster management authorities have urged residents to stay indoors and remain vigilant during the ongoing adverse weather. Emergency operation centers at both the state and district levels are operational, and helpline numbers have been provided for emergencies.

These measures are part of intensive disaster preparedness efforts, following deadly landslides last year in Mizoram that claimed over 30 lives. The government takes these tragedies seriously and is coordinating across agencies to prevent a recurrence this year. [Landslides in Mizoram Last Year]

As the rain continues to pour, residents of Aizawl district are hopeful that the weather will improve soon, enabling schools to reopen and normalcy to return.

The heavy rainfall forecasted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) might affect the Indian cricket team's preparations for their upcoming matches, as Aizawl district in Mizoram faces landslides and incessant downpours. The ongoing adverse weather conditions have forced the closure of schools in the Aizawl district, putting a halt to routine activities.
