Railway traffic disrupted mysteriously in Upper Franconia; possibility of sabotage under investigation?

On August 12, 2025, an incident occurred at Coburg Central Station in Bavaria, Germany, that has disrupted train traffic and caused significant damage to the railway infrastructure.

Unknown individuals severed several cables at the station, essential for switch and signal systems, around 5 a.m. on Tuesday. The cables controlled switches and signals at the station, leading to disruptions in train traffic. The damage to the property is estimated to be around 20,000 euros.

The police are seeking witnesses to the incident and are actively investigating the suspected sabotage. Witnesses who saw suspicious persons or vehicles in the area of Coburg station early on Tuesday morning are asked to contact the Criminal Police in Coburg at 09561/645-0.

Investigations are ongoing, with the authorities working to ascertain the causes and to prevent future sabotage. Traces were secured at the scene of the incident, and interrogations have been conducted as part of the investigation.

The repairs to the damaged cables were completed hours after the initial report, and the railway infrastructure is now secure for stable operation.

It is worth noting that a left-wing radical group named "Kommando Angry Birds" has claimed responsibility for similar attacks on railway facilities in other German regions. However, no official claim or identification of the attackers responsible for the Coburg incident has been publicly released as of now.

The investigation is due to suspicion of endangering train traffic, and the General Prosecutor's Office in Munich is not currently involved in the case. The police are urging anyone with information to come forward and help in the investigation to ensure the safety and security of railway infrastructure.
