Railway station in Volgograd region, Russia experiences fire following Ukrainian drone assault, Russian authorities report

In the early hours of August 7, 2025, a significant drone attack targeted the Volgograd region in Russia, specifically focusing on its energy and transport infrastructure. The regional administration confirmed the incident, describing it as "massive."

The attack involved multiple drones, with about 10 explosions heard, followed by debris falling from one of the drones. The incident occurred at two railway stations in the towns of Surovikino and Maksim Gorky.

At Surovikino railway station, a fire broke out in the administrative building, which firefighting services are working to extinguish. At Maksim Gorky railway station, sappers are dealing with drone fragments but reported no damage to facilities. Railway traffic, however, continued as usual.

The power line was damaged as a result of the attack at the railway station building in Volgograd. An unexploded drone also fell on railway tracks near the Archeda train station.

Regional Governor Andrei Bocharov said that Russia’s air defense claimed to have repelled the drone attack, resulting in no casualties. However, damage did occur. The full scale of the attack is not immediately clear.

Flights at the regional airport in Volgograd were halted for several hours but resumed around 0300 GMT. Several regional trains were delayed in the area due to the incident.

The Volgograd region, which lies not far from the border with Ukraine, has been a target of frequent attacks by Ukrainian forces. Ukraine has previously struck other railway stations near the Russia-Ukraine border, key fuel depots, ammunition stockpiles, and military facilities with drones and missiles.

No immediate comment was made by Ukraine regarding the attack. Reuters could not independently verify the reports. The Russian civil aviation authority Rosaviatsia has also not commented on the attack.

The governor made the announcement on the Telegram messaging app. The latest information reports suggest that the attack was part of a broader campaign targeting multiple aspects of Russia’s military logistics and infrastructure.
