Railway sector in Russian North-Caucasus suffers disruption due to drone assault
On Tuesday, August 5th, a series of drone strikes targeted railway infrastructure in Russia's Rostov region, according to independent Russian news outlet ASTRA. The strikes disrupted train traffic and caused significant damage to the railway system, particularly in the Millerovo district.
The Tatsinskaya railway hub, a vital frontline artery for transporting military supplies into the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, was one of the main targets. The administrative building of the traction power station "Staraia Stanitsa" was destroyed in the explosion and fire, and the substation was left powerless during the attack. A high-voltage line pole was also damaged in the incident.
The strikes, which occurred overnight, resulted in large fires that required a fire train to be deployed for extinguishing. The acting governor of the Rostov region, Andrey Slusar, reported a fire covering approximately 500 square meters. The strikes also caused an explosion and fire, which led to two backup transformers catching fire.
The Russian army uses railways to transport equipment, ammunition, and personnel to the front. The disruptions caused by these strikes are expected to have a significant impact on Russia's operational supply chain, delaying hundreds of trains and disrupting critical rail traffic.
In recent months, Ukraine's Defense Forces have been regularly attacking railway targets in Russia's border regions. The strikes on the village of Verkhnetalovka and Tatsinskaya are part of an escalating Ukrainian campaign to degrade Russia’s war capabilities by attacking critical logistics hubs deep inside Russian territory.
Despite Russian air defenses claiming to repel many drones and shoot down dozens overnight, the strikes nonetheless caused significant delays and required firefighting and evacuation efforts, demonstrating vulnerabilities in Russia’s rear logistics.
Fortunately, no civilian casualties were reported from the Tatsinskaya strikes, but infrastructure damage and temporary power outages affected local communities. The strikes illustrate a strategic shift in Ukraine’s approach, focusing on logistical nodes rather than front-line combat, aiming for cumulative operational impact against Russian war efforts.
The Southern Transport Prosecutor's Office reported disruptions in train schedules following the attack. The strikes on the railway infrastructure in Rostov Oblast are expected to have far-reaching consequences for Russia's military logistics, as the country continues to face challenges in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
