In a significant development, the German passenger association Pro Bahn has proposed Anna-Theresa Korbutt as a candidate for the next CEO of Deutsche Bahn. Korbutt, currently the CEO of the Hamburg Transport Association (HVV), is known for her leadership in the public transport sector and her potential to reform and modernize the German railway system.
Born in Danzig and raised in Paderborn, Korbutt began her career at Deutsche Bahn before moving on to lead HVV. She is renowned for simplifying and optimising processes, such as streamlining ticketing options and promoting the popular Deutschlandticket. Pro Bahn values her approach of breaking up entrenched structures that hinder innovation in Deutsche Bahn, emphasising that she is not one of the long-time insiders but an outsider who can challenge the status quo effectively.
Lukas Iffländer, the federal chairman of Pro Bahn, made these suggestions to the German Press Agency. He highlighted Korbutt's willingness to take clear stances, such as during the Germany ticket funding debate, and stressed that a new CEO must build a strong management team to overcome the operational and financial issues currently facing Deutsche Bahn.
The nomination came shortly after the federal government, via transport minister Patrick Schnieder, announced the early exit of Lutz, signalling a push for structural and leadership changes in Germany’s rail system.
The new strategy for the railway system, expected to address the current operational and financial crisis, will be announced by September 22 in Berlin. Iffländer emphasised that the personnel change at the top of the railway would not have a short-term impact on the company's operational and financial crisis.
Pro Bahn believes the next railway chief should come from the transport sector and have knowledge of the German railway system. This aligns with Pro Bahn's call for a new dynamic to rescue and revitalize the struggling railway operator.
Richard Lutz will remain in office until his successor is appointed.
