Heaving under the weight of holiday travel demand, Deutsche Bahn is pulling out all the stops. Optional extra trains will only add to the festive rail lineup, offering 60 special services between December 20th and January 1st. These will primarily target high-traffic routes, like Berlin-Göttingen-Frankfurt and Cologne-Munich via Frankfurt and Stuttgart.
Bedecked in tinsel and lights, Deutsche Bahn hopes to sprinkle some extra magic on holidays, offering more room and rides for people. "With more breathing space and trains available, we want to make your journey to the holidays calm and comfortable," Michael Peterson, head of long-distance transportation, expressed her delight. "Whenever it's possible, every train will be available for our passengers over the holidays."
Due to Christmas Eve falling on a Sunday this year, high demand for the pre-Christmas week has already ensnared Deutsche Bahn. The booking figures gleefully foreshadow a jamboree starting from December 18th. Karl-Peter Naumann, honorary chairman of the passenger association "Pro Bahn," anticipates overflowing trains over the holidays, despite the extra seats on offer. "It's bound to be especially bustling on Friday," he admitted on request. However, he was quick to add that it wasn't within Deutsche Bahn's power to stoke the fire any further by offering more than the 60 special trains. The main hurdle remains personnel-related.
Although Deutsche Bahn acknowledges the challenge, they've been promoting their commitment to attracting new talent, having hired approximately 3,400 additional staff this year in long-distance transportation. According to their plans, around 300 more service hands will be deployed at stations during the holidays to ensure a hassle-free holiday season.
