Rail service resumes between Düsseldorf and Duisburg on railways

The Düsseldorf-Duisburg railway line in Germany was paralyzed on August 1, 2025, following an arson attack that caused significant disruptions to this crucial north-south connection. The attack affected tens of thousands of travelers, but service resumed early Saturday morning (02.08.2025).

A far-left group, the "Angry Birds Kommando" (or "Angry Birds Commando"), claimed responsibility for the attack through a letter published on the left-wing platform Indymedia. The group stated that the attack was a protest against the "industrial system" they described as destructive to the environment.

German authorities, including the police and the State Protection Authority, are treating the incident as deliberate sabotage and suspect left-wing extremists, although the authenticity of the claim is still under investigation. As of the current reports, the police are verifying the authenticity of the claim while continuing their investigation.

The Düsseldorf-Duisburg line is one of the most heavily used railway connections in Germany, with over 620 trains daily. The fires caused by the arson attack destroyed cables for controlling switches and signals, causing significant disruption to regional and long-distance traffic.

Train traffic has resumed, and services are running mostly according to schedule. The German Railway Company is providing updates on the incident, and a disruption map from Zuginfo.NRW is available for tracking the impact of the arson attack on rail traffic. This platform offers information about regional rail traffic in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW).

NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul and various sources, including the State Protection Authority, have stated that left-wing extremists are suspected to be responsible for the arson attack. The authorities are urging the public to stay informed and to follow any travel advisories issued by the German Railway Company and Zuginfo.NRW.
