On the Run: Villagers Flee Homes Amidst Brutal Bandit Attacks Led by Bello Turji in Sokoto State
Raidings by Bandits Forcibly Displace More Than 20 Villages in Sokoto
In a chilling turn of events, villagers in over 20 communities in Sokoto State have been forced to abandon their homes due to violent attacks orchestrated by the henchmen of infamous bandit kingpin, Bello Turji. These events have sent ripples of fear through the region, leaving many disgruntled and unsure of their future.
According to our sources, these displaced villagers have sought solace in Gatawa, a town situated in the Sabon Birni Local Government Area. The vivid images of emptied villages and the quiet desperation of the displaced are a stark reminder of the precarious state of security in the eastern part of Sokoto State, where organized banditry continues to flourish despite continuous military efforts to curb the menace.
Mallam Saminu, a resident of Gatawa, confirmed the believable reports of mass displacement. In an openly shared conversation with Punch, he stated, "Yes, it's the truth. People from numerous villages surrounding Gatawa have been displaced and seek refuge here due to the ongoing threats and assaults from one of Turji's top commanders."
Saminu further explained, "Some of the displaced are staying with their relatives in town, while others have been granted temporary shelter in two secondary schools - one located near the military camp and another within the town."
A list of affected villages includes Makira, Shabanza, Katsalle, Dan Kura, Garin Tunkiya, Dama, Dan Tazako I, II and III, Gaugai, and more. This horrifying exodus of communities underscores the ongoing struggle to maintain peace and order in the region.
The attacks perpetrated by the bandits mark yet another grim chapter in the ongoing saga of violence and chaos that plagues Sokoto State. As families scramble to find safety, it is a grim reminder that much work is yet to be done in restoring tranquility and security to the region.
