Rahul Gandhi Accuses Vote Manipulation in Karnataka, Charges CEC with Protecting 'Democracy Wreckers'

In a dramatic turn of events, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has accused the Election Commission of protecting 'destroyers of democracy' and has levelled serious allegations of voter manipulation in the run-up to the 2018 assembly elections. At a press conference held on August 17, Gandhi claimed that over 6000 deletion applications in Karnataka's Aland assembly constituency were filed by impersonators using centralised software, targeting the Congress. He also alleged that fake logins were created to request the deletion of voters from a few booths in Aland and the addition of voters in Rajura, Maharashtra. Gandhi further stated that the state CID sent 18 applications to the Election Commission seeking clarifications, but there was no response. The BJP, however, came to the defence of the Election Commission, rejecting Gandhi's allegations as completely baseless. The Election Commission, in response, has asserted that no voter can be removed from the rolls without due process. They have also emphasised the need for transparency in their operations, especially when grave allegations are made against them. The poll panel's reaction to Gandhi's charges has been described as knee-jerk so far. Transparency must be the byword for the poll body when such serious allegations are levelled. It is important that independent India's electoral system stands up to scrutiny. The Election Commission is duty-bound to investigate Gandhi's charges and issue a point-by-point rebuttal, not resort to dramatics. Gandhi presented two voters who categorically denied making any such request to delete voters but were identified as the objectors. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused Gandhi of being responsible for the allegedly fraudulent voter deletions in Aland and the allegedly manipulated voter numbers in Rajura. There have been many instances of bias by the Election Commission during elections in the last decade, particularly in enforcing the model code of conduct or acting against hate speech. This recent controversy adds to the growing concerns about the fairness and impartiality of India's electoral system. Gandhi has hoped that the people's court will back him, but it remains to be seen how this unfolds. The Election Commission's response to these allegations will be closely watched by all political parties and the general public alike.
