Gifford Fire Rages On in California, Threatening Over 2,900 Structures

As of August 8, 2025, the Gifford Fire in California continues to burn, with a reported size of 104,590 acres and 15% containment. The fire is actively burning on both sides of Highway 166, northeast of Santa Maria, with more active spread on the south side.

The Gifford Fire is located within the Los Padres National Forest in Solvang, under a unified command including Los Padres National Forest, Santa Barbara County Fire Department, and CAL FIRE. The fire threatens 2,912 structures, with no reported structures destroyed or damaged yet.

Three civilian injuries and four firefighter injuries have been reported, with no fatalities as of the latest update. The firefighting efforts are extensive, with 243 engines, 82 water tenders, 19 helicopters, 108 dozers, 83 hand crews, and a total of 3,431 personnel actively engaged.

Evacuation orders and warnings remain in place for communities near the fire, and continued monitoring through official channels such as ReadySBC and the Gifford Fire InciWeb page is advised. Highway 166 has been closed due to flames burning on both sides of the road.

The Gifford Fire is only 3% contained, according to Cal Fire. The fire has erupted amidst other wildfires in Southern California, with the Rosa Fire in Riverside County burning over 1,200 acres and the Gold Fire in San Bernardino County spreading 348 acres with 0% containment.
