Forest Fires Rage Across Northwestern Spain

A series of forest fires are currently causing concern in the northwestern regions of Spain, particularly in the provinces of Lugo and Ourense.

The fire in Pantón, Lugo, which began Sunday night, remains under control but has spread over 2,000 hectares of wooded land. The Military Emergency Unit (UME) is actively engaged in the area, conducting direct attack missions on the fire and using machinery to clear and widen the perimeter.

Unfortunately, the fire has forced the evacuation of several local residents. 17 residents from the Abelairas neighborhood were evacuated during the night, while over 50 people from Cibrisqueiros, Frontera, Budían, Souto in Pantón, and A Barca and Rosende in Sober have also been evacuated. However, most of these evacuees have since returned home.

In a related development, UME personnel are also collaborating in O Bolo, Ourense, where a fire has been stabilized, burning approximately 250 hectares. The residents of Lentellais, Santa Cruz, and O Bolo have been released from evacuation.

A new fire broke out in the parish of O Trobo in A Fonsagrada, Lugo, affecting approximately 20 hectares. To combat this fire, 3 agents, 6 brigades, and 6 water trucks have been mobilized.

The LU-P-4103 road is closed in both directions from Vila do Mato to the Station (kilometer 13), and rail traffic between Lugo and Ourense is interrupted. Adif is offering alternative road transport to affected passengers.

In a show of solidarity, the President of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, and the Minister of Rural Affairs, María José Gómez, visited the advanced command post in Ferreira de Pantón to learn about the deployed device and follow the evolution of the forest fires.

Unfortunately, two forest firefighters have been injured during these events. One was injured in Xunqueira de Ambia, Ourense, and is currently in stable condition. The incident is being studied as a possible heatstroke. Another firefighter was injured in a fire in the same town and has been transferred to Ourense Hospital for treatment.

The authorities are urging the public to stay informed and follow safety instructions as the situation continues to develop.
