Rafa Benitez intends to pursue a manager position at an English football club, as disclosed unexpectedly
Rafa Benitez, the experienced Spanish football manager, is hoping for a home win in the upcoming Merseyside derby at Anfield on Saturday. The 247th meeting between Liverpool and Everton takes place at 12.30pm on Saturday, live on talkSPORT.
Benitez, who is currently away from management, has a rich history with the Premier League, having managed four different clubs. His most notable tenure was his six-year stint as Liverpool boss between 2004 and 2010, during which he guided the Reds to their fifth Champions League title in 2005 and won the FA Cup in 2006.
However, Benitez was unable to secure a Premier League title despite coming close during the 2008/09 season. He also led Liverpool to a second Champions League final in 2007, but the team lost to AC Milan. Despite these setbacks, Benitez believes he still has plenty to offer to football as a manager.
Benitez's career began in Spain, where he managed Real Valladolid in the 1995-96 season and Osasuna in 1996. He then moved on to manage Extremadura between 1997 and 1999 and Tenerife in the 2000-01 season. His most successful spell in Spain was at Valencia, where he managed between 2001 and 2004.
Despite opportunities to leave Liverpool for Manchester City and Real Madrid, Benitez turned down these chances, choosing to remain with the Reds. However, his tenure at Everton came to an end in January 2022, and he has been away from management since leaving Celta Vigo in March 2024.
Benitez has managed a total of 14 Merseyside derbies as Liverpool boss, winning eight of them. However, he suffered a 4-1 defeat at Goodison Park with Everton in 2021. Despite this, he is optimistic about the upcoming derby and is hoping for a home win at Anfield.
Rumours suggest that Benitez might possibly want to coach an English football club in the future, but no specific English team has been mentioned in the search results. Regardless, it is clear that Benitez still has a passion for the game and is eager to return to management.
