Radio proprietor vows $25,000 match in aid for broadcasting personnel impacted by hurricane
In the wake of the destructive Hurricanes Helene and Milton, the Broadcasters Foundation of America received a significant boost in its relief efforts. John Catsimatidis, owner of Red Apple Media and radio station WABC (AM) New York, has pledged a donation of $25,000 to the foundation.
Catsimatidis' generous contribution was met with gratitude from Tim McCarthy, President of the Broadcasters Foundation. "We are deeply appreciative of John's donation," McCarthy said. "His support is crucial for our foundation to provide assistance to those in the broadcasting industry who need it most, especially in times of emergency."
Hurricane Helene, the deadliest hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, came ashore on September 26, causing a wide path of destruction as it moved north through Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. The storm prompted 150 tornado warnings, according to the Associated Press. As of October 5, the death toll from Hurricane Helene stood at 227.
Hurricane Milton, which barreled across Florida from the Gulf Coast to the Atlantic Ocean overnight on October 9, also knocked out power to more than 3 million homes.
The Broadcasters Foundation, a 501(c)3 public charity, assists television and radio broadcast professionals in acute financial need due to health problems, disasters, or other life-changing circumstances. The funds raised from Catsimatidis' donation will be used to provide emergency grants for individual broadcasters affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
In addition to Catsimatidis' donation, WABC is running public service announcements asking its listeners to give. A taggable version of the PSA has been produced for use by other radio stations.
John Catsimatidis and his family, along with Red Apple Media and WABC Radio, have a history of supporting various causes and organizations. Catsimatidis has committed to matching $25,000 of any donation made to the Broadcasters Foundation of America, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to the broadcasting industry.
The Broadcasters Foundation engages in nationwide efforts to identify broadcasters in need and provide them with an anonymous safety net. McCarthy emphasised that every dollar donated to the foundation is considered helpful in their mission to support those in need.
