Radio Bremen's Broadcasting Council reappoints Dr Klaus Sondergeld as its chairman.

In a significant development for public broadcasting in Germany, the Broadcasting Council of Radio Bremen has reconvened for its constitutive meeting on June 6th. Dr. Klaus Sondergeld has been re-elected as chairman of the council, while Ellen Best has been re-elected as the deputy chairman.

Dr. Klaus Sondergeld, who has held the chair since 2016, brings a wealth of experience to the role. Before his re-election, he held various positions, including at the press office of the University of Bremen, a journalist in the science department of television, and 'Head of Current Affairs' in the Mannheim studio of the then South German Broadcasting (SDR). He also served as spokesperson for the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen and managed the public-private partnership institution Bremen Marketing GmbH before retiring in 2016.

Dr. Sondergeld was sent to the Broadcasting Council by the City of Bremen and has been publicly active as the Chairman of the council before his appointment as spokesperson for the Senate. He has promised to continue to exercise oversight responsibly for the coming four years.

Ellen Best, who has been serving alongside Sondergeld since 2021, moved to Bremen from Bavaria in 1982 and worked as a lawyer before joining the Bremen judiciary as a public prosecutor and judge in 1993. Since 2012, she has been vice president of the local court and works as a supervisor and mediator in addition to her position as deputy chairman of the Broadcasting Council. She applied for her appointment to the Broadcasting Council in the Science, Media, Data Protection, Freedom of Information and Digitalisation (WMDID) committee of the Bremen Parliament.

Dr. Yvette Gerner, the Intendant of Radio Bremen, congratulated the re-elected chairman and thanked the members of the Broadcasting Council for their willingness to engage for their regional broadcasting institution. Gerner expressed her anticipation for working constructively with the re-elected chairman and all the representatives of the committee. She stated that the Broadcasting Council's diversity stands for the diversity of society and helps Radio Bremen stay on course, even in times of inflation, populism, and deepfakes.

The Broadcasting Council of Radio Bremen, consisting of 33 members and their deputies, is the highest supervisory body responsible for program control in German public broadcasting institutions. However, the role of oversight has been repeatedly criticized in recent times. The last four years have been challenging for public broadcasting and its oversight committees.

As the Broadcasting Council moves forward, it is crucial that they continue to uphold their mandate of overseeing the fulfilment of the legal mandate by the station and representing the interests of the general public regarding the institution. Dr. Sondergeld and Best are poised to lead this charge, ensuring that Radio Bremen remains a trusted and valued source of information for the people of Bremen.
