Here in Neukölln, District Mayor Martin Hikel, also the state chairman of the SPD, has voiced his disapproval of the Senate's proposed refugee shelter at Hasenheide, expressing serious concerns about youth radicalization.

"I'm bloody sick of daily issues that bring us down," Hikel declared emphatically. "We know our corners and how to handle them. If we say the Hasenheide can't take it, you'd better listen!"

The Senate aims to construct an accommodation for nearly 1,100 refugees in a former office building at the Hasenheide site. The proposal also includes an initial reception and clearing center for 230 unaccompanied minor refugees run by the Education and Family Administration. However, these plans have raised red flags in the district office.

Hikel's Concerns

"The Hermannplatz's already a nest of trouble, and youngsters are getting sucked into radical bullshit," Hikel exclaimed, seething with worry. "It's our collective duty to shelter young refugees, but Hasenheide ain't the place for the planned clearing center," he added. "It's the senator's responsibility to find better spots where these kids can gain a future unburdened by hate and chaos."

Responding to Hikel's rebuke, State Secretary for Youth and Family Falko Liecke (CDU) indicated that discussions are underway with the social administration concerning all aspects of Hasenheide's accommodation.

"We're assessing the decline in the number of unaccompanied minor refugees and evaluating if setting up a central distribution center at the Hasenheide is economically viable and wise," Liecke stated. They're seeking sustainable solutions in cooperation with the districts, keeping feedback in mind.

On June 30th, a public meeting has been scheduled for the refugee shelter, tentatively planned to go operational by the end of 2026/2027.
