In a surprising turn of events, the state branch of AfD in Brandenburg has been officially labeled as a confirmed far-right organization by the Office of Constitutional Protection. This classification comes a few days after the federal party was declared as such by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
State Interior Minister Katrin Lange (SPD) made the announcement in Potsdam, stating that the classification by the state office dates back to April 14. However, Lange expressed her discontent as she only received the classification note on May 5, suggesting that the assessment should have been made available to her immediately.
Lange did not mince words when she dismissed the head of the Office of Constitutional Protection, Jörg Müller, on Tuesday, citing lack of trust as the reason. The public was left uninformed about this crucial process, Lange added, stating, "The classification stands," but admitting that she has yet to fully read and process the note since May 5.
Far-Right Classification Spread Across Multiple State Branches
Previously, the AfD state party in Brandenburg was evaluated as a suspect case. This new classification puts Brandenburg in the company of other states such as Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, where the respective state offices for the protection of the constitution have already classified the party as confirmed far-right.
While the exact timing of the classification for the Brandenburg branch remains unclear, the federal party was officially classified as a "confirmed right-wing extremist endeavor" by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution in May 2025[1][2].
