Occupation of Abandoned Stasi Building in Lichtenberg by Far-Left Activists

Michel Behrendt reports on an occupation of an abandoned high-rise in Lichtenberg, previously used by the Stasi, over the weekend. Police were present in large numbers as activists congregated for a scheduled demonstration against housing vacancy in Berlin.

The contested building, known as "House 15," was once the headquarters of the Main Administration of Reconnaissance (HV A) and the foreign intelligence service of the Ministry for State Security (MfS). Deutsche Bahn later occupied the complex, and it most recently served as a refugee home before standing empty.

Several individuals exploited the demonstration as an opportunity to storm the building at Ruschestraße corner Frankfurter Allee, barricading themselves inside. As the number of protesters remained unclear, police dog handlers were brought in to conduct a thorough search of the multi-story facility.

According to a police spokesperson, around 50 people gathered in front of the building, chanting slogans such as "Give the houses to those who need them." Pro-Intifada slogans were also heard, along with police-hostile music.

After several hours, the protesters vacated the building, with some choosing to exit voluntarily and others escorted out by police officers. The situation concluded peacefully, according to reports.
