Racist episode confirmed at Leeds United: Sunderland supporter detained by authorities

In the thrilling conclusion of the 2024-25 Championship campaign, both Leeds United and Sunderland secured their promotions to the Premier League. The two teams are set to face each other for the first time in over 20 years on December 27. However, the celebrations were marred by a racially-aggravated public order incident that occurred at Elland Road Stadium during the Leeds United FC vs. Sunderland AFC match on February 17, 2025.

West Yorkshire Police have been actively investigating the incident, and a 66-year-old man from Bishop Auckland, County Durham, was arrested on suspicion of causing racially aggravated harassment, alarm, or distress following Leeds United's 2-1 win over Sunderland at Elland Road.

CCTV images have been released to identify a man in connection with the incident. Although the man has not been publicly identified, he is believed to be a Sunderland fan. The man is summoned to appear at Leeds Magistrates Court next month.

Leeds United Football Club, Ethan Ampadu, and Largie Ramazani—who scored twice in the second half to lead Leeds to a comeback win over Sunderland—issued a statement thanking West Yorkshire Police for their support in this matter. Largie Ramazani's celebratory actions at full-time, which involved dancing in front of Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil, have not been linked to the incident.

Notably, Largie Ramazani will not play in the match against Sunderland, as he is on loan to Spanish side Valencia for the 2025-26 season. Leeds captain Ethan Ampadu is expected to feature in the match at the Stadium of Light.

The statement also emphasized that there is no room for racism in football or society. The incident at Elland Road Stadium serves as a grim reminder that such incidents continue to occur, and collective efforts are needed to eradicate them.

In the midst of this unfortunate incident, the promotion of both Leeds United and Sunderland to the Premier League remains a significant achievement. The much-anticipated match between the two teams promises to be an exciting affair, with both sides eager to make their mark in the top tier of English football.
