Racist Arson Attack: Another Individual Charged for Aiding and Abetment
Nearly three decades after a hate-motivated arson attack on an asylum seekers' home in Saarlouis, Saarland, the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office has indicted a second suspect for aiding and abetting in the crimes. The accused allegedly played a part in the deadly assault that claimed a life and left several others injured.
Asylum seeker Samuel Yeboah, aged 27, from Ghana, West Africa, tragically lost his life in the 1991 fire at the asylum seekers' home. Two other residents had to jump from a window and were left with fractured bones. The remaining 18 residents managed to escape unharmed. The new suspect is believed to have fueled the arsonist's ideology when he openly praised racist attacks just before the attack occurred.
The perpetrator of the attack, now 52 years old, was sentenced to six years and ten months in prison by the Koblenz Higher Regional Court in October of last year. The verdict is still pending.
During the trial, the 52-year-old individual was identified as a prominent figure in the skinhead scene at the time. He has been in custody since the start of June this year.
According to recent reports, the accused individually visited a restaurant in Saarlouis on the evening of September 18/19, 1991, in the company of the previously convicted man. The group discussed racist incidents in eastern Germany during their outing. The accused is said to have openly expressed a desire to see similar attacks take place within Saarlouis, stating, "Something like that should burn or happen here too." The convicted man was reportedly influenced and inspired by these comments.
As the investigation proceeds, the court must now determine whether the aiding and abetment charges are admissible.
