Unveiling the Crashgate Drama: Flavio Briatore's Defense
Racing icon rejects accusations tied to Crashgate scandal
In the hallowed halls of Formula 1, scandals have been as frequent as the chequered flags. One such episode was the Crashgate saga in 2008, involving Renault and their drivers, Nelson Piquet Jr. and Fernando Alonso. Seven years later, Flavio Briatore, formerly team principal of Renault F1 Team, stands firm in clearing his name of the allegations surrounding the crash.
Détente: Briatore and Piquet's No-Man's Land
In 2010, Piquet Jr. alleged that Briatore had instructed him, "If you crash at the right moment, it could change everything." However, in an Italian newspaper interview with Corriere della Sera, Briatore denied the conversation ever took place, firing back with classic Italian nonchalance, "He and I never spoke."
To put an end to the lingering animosity, Briatore declares, "No, I have no interest in that. I didn’t even speak much with him when he drove for me."
Redemption and Litigation: Massa's Title Tussle
Despite Briatore's lifetime ban from F1 for his role in Crashgate in 2009, Renault's technical director, Pat Symonds, and the FIA reached an out-of-court settlement in 2010 that reduced their exclusion from F1 to less than three years[1][3]. In 2023, seventeen years later, Felipe Massa took to the courts for a potential World Championship title[2]. Lewis Hamilton had clinched the title in Brazil, but Massa argued that the Singapore victory, which led to his disqualification due to the Crashgate scandal, should have positioned him for victory.
Back in the Game: Briatore’s Second Act
Despite the lingering controversy, Flavio Briatore returned to Formula 1 in 2023, this time as an advisor at Alpine. His controversial comeback was met with skepticism, with Briatore taking over the day-to-day operations following Oliver Oakes' resignation in May 2025[3][4]. With Luca de Meo's support, Briatore continues to wield significant influence over Alpine's driver lineups and strategic decisions.
